Coward. I ran with fear gripping my mind, my hands in the air, and a girlish high pitched squeal. My family had been
camping for three days near the Mark Twain Lake in northeastern Missouri. That afternoon, my friends and I, were doing what most kids do on a camping trip; we were climbing trees, jumping off rocks, and running wild in the woods. After spending most of the afternoon among the trees, we were walking back to the campsite. It was at that moment that I stepped on a long black snake.
If you have ever stepped on snake, you know that they don’t simply lay under your foot; which makes perfect sense. But shot my eyes to the ground to see what was under my foot, the snakes head whipped around with mouth open, and its eyes bore into me with anger. It was at that moment that I squealed and ran.
Have you ever stepped on a snake? They wiggle and squirm. I remember that second of terror. As I stepped on the snake, its head whipped around at me and I freaked out.
I hate snakes. Primarily because I am scared of them, but they just seem evil to me. There was no way I would have stayed to try and subdue that snake. That experience is so very like how all of us have encountered that Ancient Serpent that led Adam and Eve to death.
We are fearful of his power and we are easily steered off the path toward destruction. When he raises his head we cower because we feel powerless to resist his temptations. We feel weak and unable to wrestle him to the ground and subdue him. There is a reason we feel this way. Because its true. Throughout human history, no one has been able to destroy him.
Something different is happening in the birth of Jesus.
The virgin birth is not some sweet little Christmas story—it is the place of cosmic battle. If we truly understand the virgin birth, it is scary. Because in the uterus of this Middle Eastern Girl—God is declaring war on the kingdom of Satan.

Fantastic analogy! Well done bro! We are cowards when facing the serpent but praise be to God for the courage, the strength, even the fury with which He equips us to go and stand on his neck in triumph! May God strengthen our hands around the handles of our swords and tighten the armor around our bodies and let us fight like men.
How the battle rages but the victory has already been won. Oh and I hate snakes too!
